A farm with 1000 sows in
Yulin City, Guangxi Province
On 24th October 2018, Puai Group invited Danish expert Hans Aae to visit a farm in Yulin City, Guangxi Province. Hans Aae has rich farming experience in Denmark, which helps customers solve problems in farms. The main problem in this farm is the sudden death of weaned piglets when they weigh 10-15 kg. Hans Aae analyzed this problem as follows
Hans Aae mentioned that there are many causes of sudden death of piglets. Farmers should have sharp observation to detect and treat piglets earlier.
1.The death of piglets caused by edema:
edema is a sporadic acute disease of weaned piglets caused by the toxin of pathogenic Escherichia coli. The incidence of robust piglets dying suddenly after weaning is about 10-35%. When piglets are weaning, we should avoid overfeeding them solid food immediately. Limiting the amount of intake of pigs, and then gradually increase to normal volume in 2-3 weeks.
2.Death caused by pig stress syndrome (PSS):
pigs with sensitive stress die suddenly when severe stimulation occurs. It is generally believed to be related to genetic susceptibility. Stress factors such as management, temperature, transportation and biting can cause sudden death. Decreasing stress stimuli or using anti-stress drugs before the stress during the pig management, such as weighing, transportation and treatment.
3.Death caused by porcine mulberry heart disease and nutritional liver necrosis:
mulberry heart disease is a disease with internal and external membranes covered with bleeding spots such as mulberry in pig's heart. Nutritional hepatic necrosis showed severe hepatic hemorrhage and necrotic softening. According to the research, both diseases are caused by the lack of selenium and vitamin E. Therefore, pay attention to the supplementation of selenium and vitamin E in the process of dietary allocation.
4.Death caused by intestinal displacement:
intestinal obstruction caused by intestinal displacement, which causing acute death of sick pigs. Intestinal displacement includes intussusception, torsion and clamping of the intestine. The lesions were mostly seen in the small intestine with intestinal edema, hemorrhage and necrosis. Hemorrhagic fluid was also found in the abdominal cavity. The main clinical symptoms were no intake, abdominal pain and no defecation. These Symptoms are often related to the imbalance of feeding management or feed nutrition allocation. Therefore, pay more attention to the daily dietary management of weaned piglets.
5.Death caused by proliferative hemorrhagic bowel disease:
the disease is caused by an intracellular parasitic bacterium. The incidence rate is only 0.7-7%, and it attacks majority 1 to 12-month-old pigs. The clinical symptoms are sudden death in healthy pigs. Anatomical examination revealed small intestine, occasionally large intestine, intestinal wall thickening, mucosal bleeding and blood content in intestinal cavity. Therefore, regular insecticidal treatment and medical health care should be carried out for weaned piglets to reduce the incidence of piglets.
The increase in the number of deaths of weaned piglets has a direct impact on the economic benefits of farms. When the sudden death of piglets occurs, the causes should be analyzed to solve the problem fundamentally, and then improve the efficiency of farms.
